Porsche Service Serving All of Venice, CA

Venice was laid out for streetcars and people on foot, and it shows. The residential streets are narrow and many have speed humps. The walk streets have no car access at the front at all, so garages open onto alleys, and the alleys are old concrete with a drainage channel down the middle and a dip where each one meets the street. Few trips start or end without crossing several of these. A Porsche has firm springs, short suspension travel and low-profile tires, which is what makes it precise on a good road. On Venice pavement the same design means each edge arrives as a sharp knock instead of being absorbed.

The parts that take those knocks are rubber. Each suspension arm pivots in a rubber bushing, and the anti-roll bar is tied to the suspension by short drop links. Repeated impacts crack the bushings and loosen the joints. You hear it first: a knock from the front over a hump, or a creak as the car settles coming out of an alley. The front lower control arm bushings on the 986, 996, 987 and 997 generations are a known case. Wheels suffer separately. A large wheel on a short sidewall has very little air between the rim and the edge of a pothole, and a bent inner rim shows up as a vibration at freeway speed or a tire that slowly loses pressure. Here is the cheap answer first: a knock over humps is very often a drop link, one of the smallest parts in the suspension. Have the links and bushings checked before you accept a quote for dampers.

Why Venice Drivers Trust The Werkstatt

In Venice the usual complaint is a knock over a speed hump, and the cause is often a small part such as a drop link. We're an independent, Porsche-only shop with more than 30 years on these cars, from the 911 and Boxster to the Cayenne and Panamera. One shop, at 10527 Santa Monica Blvd in West LA, a short run up the 405. Bring the car in, we'll evaluate it and give you a quote.

    • Speed humps and alley dips wear control arm bushings, ball joints and drop links faster than smooth roads do
    • A bend in a wheel usually hides on the inner rim, and a sidewall bulge is a reason to replace a tire
    • A knock over humps is often a drop link rather than a damper, which keeps Porsche suspension repair small
    • We work on every Porsche model line, from the 911 to the Macan and Cayenne
    • Buying a car that has lived on these streets? A pre-purchase inspection covers the suspension and wheels

    About Venice, CA

Abbot Kinney founded Venice in 1905 as a seaside resort with canals, and Los Angeles annexed it in 1926. Most of the canals were later filled in and paved, and the few that remain are lined with homes. Ocean Front Walk runs along the beach past Muscle Beach and the skate park, and Abbot Kinney Boulevard is the main shopping street. Venice, Lincoln and Washington Boulevards carry most of the traffic in and out, with Main Street and Pacific Avenue near the sand. Parking is tight: many homes have only an alley garage, and street spaces fill quickly on beach days. Our shop is northeast, reached by Venice Boulevard and the 405.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Porsche Service in Venice

Answers to common questions from Venice drivers about Porsche Service.

There's a clunk from the front of my Porsche over speed humps. What is it?

Most often a worn anti-roll bar drop link or a cracked control arm bushing. Less often a damper or its top mount. They sound alike from the driver's seat, which is why it pays to find the cause before replacing parts. Replacing arms changes the geometry, so an alignment is needed after the work.

How should I drive a low Porsche over Venice speed humps and alley dips?

Slowly, and off the brakes as you reach the hump. Braking makes the nose dive, which is when the front lip and undertray touch. Finish braking first, then roll over. Take alley dips at an angle, so one front wheel drops at a time.

My tire keeps losing a little air and the car vibrates on the freeway. Could it be a bent wheel?

Yes. A pothole or a curb can bend the inner edge of the rim, where you can't see it. The bend breaks the seal with the tire and puts the wheel out of round.

How do I get to your shop from Venice?

Take Venice Boulevard east to the 405 north and exit at Santa Monica Boulevard, then head east about a mile to 10527.
